It’s that time of year again. Kids are going back to school and adjusting to changes. Some children start to exhibit anxious and depressed behaviors including crying, tantrums, isolation and sleeplessness just to name a few. Parents may question, how long should I let this go before I worry? What can I do to help my child?
The onset of behavioral and emotional problem usually occur within the three month period of when the change (stressor) starts. Children typically adjust within a 2-3 week period. Parents can help by validation feelings, talk about routines and positive aspect of the change. For children who are more quiet and withdrawn, having them journal or draw pictures of how they feel. Allow time to talk about it with them.
Children with more severe emotion and behavioral issues (after 4 weeks) may need professional assistance in order to adjust to changes.
